Tiny Castle from the developer TinyCo is a free-to-play fantasy-themed city building game available on mobile devices, where the primary focus is on growing your small castle into a large kingdom with subjects largely in the form of small creatures that are bred from eggs whom are used to complete quests and generally to help strengthen the fight against the evil queen and her desire to paint the lands with an insidious fog that maintains her magical power.

Tiny Castle Gameplay

Most of the gameplay in Tiny Castle is done through an isometric overview of your kingdom including your “structures” and of course your very own castle, by which you rule and protect against sinister forces such as the evil queen mentioned earlier. As mentioned you grow creatures in order to expand your kingdom; however, that is not the only thing to do within Tiny Castle. In order to do so you must feed them through growing food at your farms and with a solid progression of superior crops that lead to higher yields of food to feed all of your hungry subjects as long as you manage your supplies well you show be able to expand at a decent rate.

Another way to unlock many of the various creature-types is to explore new territory outside your present Tiny Castle kingdom and once accomplished, small sections of the evil queen’s fog are removed and additional buildings are revealed. This adds anything underneath that mist to your kingdom, which is limited by your magic dust. In Tiny Castle, magic dust is used to expand your territories in addition to research.

In terms of the economy, most of the actions such as constructing new buildings, growing new creatures and the like require gold coins. This serves as the primary currency for Tiny Castle and is earned through those very same creatures that live in a “home” (each one having a different house depending on the creature itself), once they have produced enough coins, simply tap their home to collect them and add them to your resource pool (the same method is used to gather your fully grown food). Like many free-to-play games if you are willing to spend real money, in-app purchasing allows you to buy sums of coins, food, magic dust and even jewels in ever increasing amounts (i.e. a handful of 3,500 coins or 30 food cost money).

An important factor that should be mentioned regarding the jewels in Tiny Castle is their purpose. These are used to rush any tasks within the game (such as growing food right away or completing a building immediately). These are only obtained through levelling up your kingdom/characters as well as purchasing as mentioned previously. Overall, this resource-based economy is the bread & butter of the game and seeks to moderate the pace of the game allowing you to play at a steady pace with the option to grow your kingdom significantly faster if you are willing to go the In-app purchasing route.

Tiny Castle Graphics

The graphics of Tiny Castle are very well done and while they will not “wow” you compared to the latest first person shooter or racing game it is extremely suitable for the games setting. Tiny Castle exudes a fantasy environment and the cartoon looking creatures and characters (whom are responsible for providing the player with quests as well as expanding the story) simply look great for a city building game leaning towards the role playing genre slightly. Overall, the graphical quality is good for its style and type and the well-done creature animations on the world map overall give an impression that this game was given proper care during development.

Tiny Castle Sounds

The music in Tiny Castle is one that befits its fantasy route, where it attempts to immerse the player into an environment that is peaceful and fun, yet hints at a sense of urgency (based on what you see during the games introduction). It is a very high quality affair and I am pleased with the audio of this app, which suits a city building game of this nature immensely.

Tiny Castle Round-up

Overall, Tiny Castle is a worthy addition to the city building genre and its unique fantasy setting with a strong emphasis on growing creatures to expand your kingdom and accomplish quests make this particular app enjoyable. The music is suitable and will help to immerse the player into the light-hearted fantasy environment for at least a few hours every day. In addition, the graphics, while not bleeding edge (not expected though for the city building genre) and extremely well done and with a user interface that is clean and unobtrusive makes this an excellent as well as entertaining game if you are ready to dive into an app that provide the player with an opportunity to build a kingdom in a luscious imaginary world.

Bottom line: Another great creature collecting game from TinyCo!

One Response to “Tiny Castle Review”

  1. I have been trying for a few weeks now to get some of the quest creatures such as, wrym, and fire nymph, and a few of the others but it doesn’t seem to matter what combo I put them in and how many times I do the same order, I always get one of two. Either cockatrice or fairy. Is their anything I should be doing differently?
